Who is Father Emil Kapaun?
According to the Fr. Emil Capaun's official website:
Born in Pilsen, Kansas on Holy Thursday, April 20, 1916, Father Kapaun was ordained a Priest in 1940 and entered the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps in 1944. In 1950 Father Kapaun was ordered to Korea and in November of that same year was taken as a prisoner of war. During the next seven months, Father Kapaun spent himself in heroic service to his fellow prisoners without regard for race, color or creed.
There is testimony of men of all faiths that ignoring his own ill health, he nursed the sick and wounded until a blood clot in his leg prevented his daily rounds. Denying medical assistance, he died soon after on May 23, 1951.
The Diocese of Wichita and the Vatican have begun the formal process that could lead to Father Kapaun's canonization, announcing in 1993 that Fr. Kapaun would be receiving the title: "Servant of God".
Father Kapaun gave glory to God by following his call to the priesthood and thus serving the people of Kansas and those in the military. The following prayer is recommended when invoking the help of the late Catholic Army chaplain who is being considered for sainthood:
