Pray with Monica: A Scriptural Rosary with the Holy Angels

Posted by webprayze Admin on March 18, 2015 at 6:00 PM Comments comments (0)

It is a pearl of great price, the centerpiece of Marian devotion---the holy rosary. By the same token, it remains at the very backbone of Catholic prayer life, its power and efficacy legendary among the faithful. In our own home, we prefer praying what is now widely known as a Scriptural Rosary. (To avoid wading into any controversy regarding the use of the word, "scriptural" here is applied in its widest sense and most popular usage.) The name in the title--Pray with Monica--is simply my daughter's name; in addition, as formulated, the intent is for a prayer devotion joined to the unceasing praise of the heavenly hosts and all the Holy Angels through Mary, Queen of Heaven! This blog was started on many good intentions more than a year ago, and added to in fits and starts afterwards in the same spirit; in anticipation of the Feast of the Anunciation this coming March 25, however, its final completion took on greater intensity!

Certainly, I will be the first to admit that regular practice and mastery of a personal rosary devotion is hard to come by for individuals, even more so, for modern families. (This is true for me and my family, further owing to my husband and I being in a racially and faith mixed-marriage, only my daughter and I being Catholic.) And alas, this is generally true, regardless and notwithstanding the honored tradition made popular by Father Patrick Peyton: A family that prays together stays together! Indeed daily rosary practice has been challenging for me personally, as well as, in our efforts to make it a part of our prayer devotion at home especially within the context of the popular culture and, still is, I'm afraid, a work in progress.

The inspiration for our very own "scriptural" rosary was born out of these very reasons: to aid in our own fledgling efforts to pray the family rosary daily. Being Catholic as noted, that is, relying largely on the original basic catechism of my early childhood and the bits and pieces of theology picked up from Sunday mass attendance, but with more than a healthy helping of God's grace in action thrown in, we managed to come up with our very own version---a short one!

Having started reading up for the blog on the topic of our family project, I stumbled on an apostolic letter from the late and now Saint Pope John Paul II (JP the Great to me!). While reading the same, I actually had an epiphany of sorts (no doubt a direct fruit of his charism) bringing me at his leading and, at long last, to an understanding of the rosary as a prayer of contemplation and meditation in Christ. In particular---what is known as a scriptural rosary---is, simply and truly, a meditation on and contemplation of the life of Christ as told to us in scripture.

The Apostolic Letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariæ, of the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II to the Bishops, Clergy, and Faithful on the Most Holy Rosary, celebrates it as "an echo of the prayer of Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal womb." (boldtype mine) Of course, Mary's humble response at that incomparable instant when God steps into our very own nature and humanity following her transluscent, unequivocal assent continuous to resound: Let it be...(Lk 1:3 [8)] Pope St. John Paul II honors Mary calling her the "model of contemplation," elevating the rosary to an ideal prayer to reflect and meditate on Christ: "an exquisitely contemplative prayer!" Indeed, who else best contemplated Jesus but Mary; and so who, indeed, can best lead us to Jesus, but Mary! Rightly, our late, sainted Pope reminds us: "...'Behold, your Mother!'..." (Jn 19:27)

The late Holy Father also points out that the rosary is "a compendium of the Gospel," reminding us that its prayers---starting with the 20 Mysteries, as well as, the Hail and Holy Mary's---all hearken to memorable or momentuous events in Christ's life, thus either point back or lead to Christ, and is, in fact, Christological and Christocentric. At the same token, he gently chides us though, quoting scripture: "...'In praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think they will be heard for their many words' (Mt 6:7). By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace..." Also he turns our attention to the saints, disciples all, true to their calling who each specially chose the way of the rosary as a path to holiness, among them: Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, and specifically, Blessed Bartolo Longo who exclaimed, "Whoever spreads the Rosary is saved!" Of course, in St. Pope John Paul II's own path of contemplation, "What is needed is a Christian life distinguished above all in the art of prayer."

Following is our own family Scriptural Rosary: Let's Pray with Monica...

Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!

Proverbs 30:4

After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Matthew 2:9-11

THANKSGIVING!

Guilty! I must admit lately I have cut back on time devoted to the site due to pressing personal demands on my time. Glad to report though that a good portion of it has gone to actual praying (with prayer group or alone) and almost daily mass attendance for all webprayze intentions of site bloggers and prayze angels and their families and, of course, for urgent prayer request submissions received. Certainly my own individual petitions for family members are included which brings me directly to the reason for this blog entry: THANKSGIVING! In trusting gratitude for prayers already answered or not, and/or in hopeful anticipation of it in the future, here are some short prayers and invocations in my very own personal arsenal of devotions....

PRAYER TO

OUR LADY OF FATIMA

O Most Holy Virgin Mary,

Queen of the most holy Rosary,

you were pleased to appear to the children of Fatima

and reveal a glorious message.

We implore you,

inspire in our hearts a fervent love

for the recitation of the Rosary.

By meditating on the mysteries of the redemption

that are recalled therein

may we obtain the graces and virtues that we ask,

through the merits of Jesus Christ,

our Lord and Redeemer.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

Because you were the watchful guardian of the Holy Family,

please watch over us, Christ's chosen offspring.

Like an alert father kindly keep far from us

every taint of error or corruption.

From your place of glory on high come to aid us

in our conflict with the powers of darkness.

V. St. Joseph, whom the infant Jesus so much loved,

R. Kindly intercede for us that we may be granted

all we ask for please.  Let us pray...

Assist ur Lord, by the merits of your foster father,

St. Joseph, spouse of your most holy mother.

May his help gain for us what our own efforts cannot.

This we ask through you who live and reign with

God the Father in the union of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for all the ages.  Amen.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE

Glorious St. Jude,

with faith in your goodness,

we ask your help today.

As oneof Christ's chosen apostles,

you remain a pillar and foundation

of His Church on earth.

You are counted, we know,

among the elders who always

stand before God's throne.

From your place of glory we know,

you do not forget the needs

and difficulties of Christ's little ones

here, still strugling like me,

on the way home to God.

Please intercede for us all,

gracious St. Jude, and be with us

in our daily toil and in

all our necessities.

In Christ's name

we appeal to you today!
